Floor Rugs - A Fast and Affordable Way To Improve Your Home

Floor rugs are very versatile and have many benefits when placed in any part of your home or office. They can divide a large room into areas and they can also bring different elements together. Properly placed floor rugs can liven-up a drab room, creating the right mood for that particular part of the home or office. When used with rug pads, a good rug can help make slick or slippery floors inside a room or hallway safe for children and old people to walk on. When thinking of renovating a room to improve it's look, try to see if the right floor rug will do the trick for you before spending a lot of time and money on significant alternative remodelling options.

Since floor rugs have so many uses and functions, there are a wide variety of types to choose from. Some floor coverings are named after the region where they came from or regions that they were popular in, while some types are named after their specific use or certain characteristics. This is why we have names like Persian rugs, Oriental rugs, Tibetan rugs, Flokati rugs and Southwestern which are characterized by designs and patterns that have been known to originate from those regions. There are also floor coverings that are commonly referred to as contemporary rugs, braided rugs, outdoor rugs, shaggy rugs and more.

The functionality and decorative aspect of floor rugs is limited only by your imagination, as you can practically use a rug for any logical purpose in your home. You can either use a floor covering as living room centerpiece or you can get one to blend with the entire room's theme. In high traffic areas, you can use floor rugs to protect the floor if it's made of expensive or nicely finished wood. However, you have to make sure the design you choose is durable and not just stylish. Preferably, the rug should be hand-made, because hand-made types are generally more durable than machine-made rugs, although this is not always the case.

There are two general kinds of material used in rug making, natural and synthetic. You can tell the value, sturdiness, feel, and look of floor rugs by the materials that they're made of. Examples of natural materials are animal or plant fibers, including wool, cotton, sisal, jute, sea grass or bamboo. Synthetic materials on the other hand are man-made materials like viscose, rayon, nylon, acrylic or polypropylene/olefin. Each type of material has its advantages and disadvantages depending on how you want to use the floor rug. These materials can also be mixed together to make one rug, like a blend of wool and cotton, or natural and synthetic materials.

Since floor rugs are usually on the floor, where they are used for practical and decorative purposes, they are bound to accumulate dust, stains, grime, sand, various liquids and other particles gradually over time through daily use. Because of this, you should make it a point to clean the rugs in your home regularly, especially if you have a more expensive or delicate rug in your possession. Vacuuming is one way of cleaning your floor rugs and this is usually the most recommended method to use so as to prevent any unnecessary additional wear and tear. You should also rotate your rugs at least once every year to even out the wear on your rug when one area of it gets walked on more than another. Whenever transporting floor rugs, it is most recommended to have your rugs rolled and not folded, as folding them can permanently damage the rug and shorten its life.
